Hernandez, a Cuba international, is a free agent after being released by Norwich City. The Owls are looking to strengthen their squad after a tumultuous summer. Manager Henrik Pedersen is eager to rebuild the club with experienced players like Hernandez.
Sheffield Wednesday are ready to offer former Norwich City winger Onel Hernández a permanent contract, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal. Fans can also make the transfer window even more exciting with the latest free bet offers, giving them a chance to back their favorite clubs without risking their own money.
But our sources also understand that Birmingham City and Wrexham have also both made enquiries about trying to tempt the Cuba international to join them before the transfer window shuts on the 1st September.
Hernandez was released by the Canaries this summer and our sources understand the Owls have been working hard behind the scenes to secure a deal.
Hernandez enjoyed eight years with Norwich, twice winning promotion to the Premier League.
But the 32-year-old has been out-of-contract since the end of June when the Carrow Road club decided not to offer the 14-cap international a new contract.
And with the new English domestic season having got underway, it’s hardly surprising the attack-minded forward is looking to find himself a permanent move.
Hernandez has played eight seasons in the Championship and the Owls are keen to strengthen their squad following a string of departures this summer after unpaid wages and uncertainty over the potential sale of the club.
The Owls are currently operating under a restrictive transfer embargo, but they can sign free agents.
PREMIER LEAGUE PEDIGREE
Hernandez, who also boasts Premier League and international experience, could prove to be the right fit as Owls boss Henrik Pedersen looks to rebuild the club following so much unwanted turmoil.
The Owls had been linked with a move for former Leeds United captain Liam Cooper, but the club have been unable to get a deal done.
And Pedersen recently revealed it is proving frustrating for him and his staff as they look to make steps forward because of the transfer restrictions imposed on them at Hillsborough.
“There is communication every day and I know that the club is working hard to solve the challenge we have right now, so we can sign some new players,” said Pedersen.
“For coaches we are also working on this and that will maybe be closer than the players.”
Hernandez signed a new two-year deal with the Canaries in 2023, but he was released this summer alongside Scotland international goalkeeper Angus Gunn, Archie Mair, Jacob Sorensen and Jonathan Tomlinson.
Editor's Insight
The fate of Sheffield Wednesday's season depends on a number of factors - wages paid, takeover finalised, embargo lifted, free agents (such as Hernández) firing on all cylinders. It's a series of events that would make any 12-leg accumulator seem like a walk in the park.
