Newcastle United have joined Everton in the race to sign Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus as Eddie Howe looks to launch a major rebuild at St James' Park this summer, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

The Magpies are understood to have made contact over the availability of the Brazilian, with Howe identifying the experienced frontman as a player capable of leading Newcastle back towards the Premier League's upper reaches.

After a frustrating campaign, Newcastle are preparing for a summer of significant change. Concerns remain over the futures of midfield stars Bruno Guimarães and Sandro Tonali, while the recent sale of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona has handed the club a sizeable transfer war chest.

Howe knows expectations are rising on Tyneside and is under pressure to deliver a team capable of challenging for European qualification once again.

Strengthening the attack is viewed as a priority, with Jesus, who is under contract until June 2027, emerging as one of the club's most attractive options.

PEDIGREE

The 29-year-old boasts an impressive Premier League pedigree.

Since arriving in England from Palmeiras in 2017, Jesus has scored 58 goals in 159 Premier League appearances, winning multiple titles during a trophy-laden spell at Manchester City.

Arsenal paid around £45million to bring him to North London in the summer of 2022, with Gunners boss Mikel Arteta believing the Brazilian could help transform the club's fortunes. Arteta is reportedly open to listening to offers in excess of £30m for Jesus' services, with Italian giants Juventus and AC Milan also showing interest.

While injuries have disrupted parts of his Arsenal career, Jesus has still managed 21 Premier League goals in 84 appearances for the Gunners and remains one of the division's most respected forwards.

His relentless work-rate, movement and ability to operate across the front line continue to make him an attractive proposition for potential suitors.

On the international stage, Jesus has been capped 63 times by Brazil, winning the Copa America and representing his country at two World Cups.

His experience at the highest level is one of the reasons Newcastle believe he could prove invaluable during a period of transition.

DETERMINATION

Despite speculation over his future, Jesus has previously spoken positively about Arsenal and his desire to compete for trophies.

Earlier this year, he insisted the Gunners were "getting closer" to achieving major success, while also stressing his determination to prove himself after recovering from a lengthy injury lay-off.

However, regular football could ultimately prove decisive.

Sources close to the situation suggest Jesus is open to remaining in the Premier League if opportunities at Arsenal become limited, with Newcastle and Everton both monitoring developments closely.

For Howe, the appeal is obvious. Newcastle need proven quality, leadership and goals if they are to bounce back from a disappointing season.

And with money to spend and pressure mounting on the manager, a move for the striker could turn into a battle with the Toffees, who want him more.

The Magpies are expected to remain active in the market, but few targets would arrive with a CV quite as impressive as the Arsenal and Brazil star.

Newcastle’s interest feels more opportunistic than decisive right now, while Everton’s project hinges heavily on structure and guarantees of minutes. If we’re hedging, the smart money still sits with Jesus staying at Arsenal unless a clear starting role is promised elsewhere. If he does move, Newcastle look slightly better placed than Everton, given resources and ambition.
