Before the summer transfer market officially opens, clubs looking to strengthen their defensive line in European football are already launching a massive transfer battle.
Premier League side Aston Villa have turned their eyes towards Spanish soil.
Manager Unai Emery has pressed the button to add an elite centre back to his squad. The experienced manager has given the green light for the transfer of young talent Jon Martin, plying his trade at Real Sociedad.
The Spaniard has been admiring his compatriot's leadership qualities and potential in defence for a long time. The club management is preparing to knock on the door of the La Liga side in this direction.
Aston Villa Financial Groundwork and Opening Bid
According to sources close to SportsBoom, Aston Villa has carried out a comprehensive budget planning to officially inquire about the situation of the Spanish centre back and present the opening bid.
The Birmingham side plans to submit an official offer package in the region of €25 million for the defender. Unai Emery aims to raise the quality of the defensive rotation with this move.
However, the Spanish club is definitely not expected to look favourably upon this offer. The Real Sociedad management maintains a clear stance on the player remaining at the team.
Martin is not the only Real Sociedad talent on Unai Emery’s radar, with Villa also previously linked with winger Ander Barrenetxea as they continue to monitor the Basque side’s emerging stars.
Real Sociedad Release Clause
SportsBoom can exclusively reveal that Real Sociedad does not intend to accept any figure below the €50 million threshold, which is the established release clause for Martin.
The Basque club has taken a completely stubborn seller position in this transfer.
The club is not backed into a financial corner and holds the contractual power of the player.
This resolute stance means that buyer clubs in the transfer market will have to stretch their budgets to the limit. Although Aston Villa is persistent in its first move they will have to overcome this strict financial barrier.
The Continental Race and Personal Terms Negotiations
The complicated side of the race is that not only has Aston Villa lined up for Jon Martin.
The young star prospect continues to remain on the radar of European giants. Arsenal, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are monitoring this talented name very closely.
The clubs are testing the waters to discuss personal terms with the representative of the player.
The hot pursuit situation of such big teams clearly proves the elite potential of the player. Each club is trying to convince the player by offering a different project. The Champions League factor and title ambitions will play a decisive role in this process.
Editor's Insight
Villa are clearly serious with their early €25m approach, but Real Sociedad hold all the leverage here. In our view, this only moves if a bid gets much closer to the €50m release clause, especially with Arsenal, Barcelona and Atletico all circling. Expect the price to dictate the destination.
