Nottingham Forest are growing increasingly confident that defender Neco Williams will commit his long-term future to the club by signing a lucrative new contract, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
The experienced Wales international, capped 56 times by his country, is poised to be rewarded for his outstanding consistency with an improved deal that would keep him at the City Ground until the summer of 2031.
It comes despite the versatile full-back only putting pen to paper on a new four-year contract less than a year ago.
Williams signed fresh terms on July 1, 2025, extending his stay on Trentside until 2029, but Forest chiefs have wasted little time in moving again amid mounting interest from rival Premier League clubs and several European sides.
The 25-year-old has developed into one of Forest’s most reliable performers since arriving from Liverpool in a £17million deal in July 2022.
He has played 160 games for the club, 129 of which have come in the top-flight. Equally comfortable on either flank, Williams has become a mainstay of the side and remains highly valued by the club’s hierarchy.
LUCRATIVE EXTENSION
Sources close to the situation indicate the proposed extension would significantly improve the defender’s current terms, reflecting both his importance to the team and the growing interest in his services.
Crucially for Forest, Williams is understood to be happy at the club and enthusiastic about the direction it is heading.
The defender has previously spoken warmly about Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis and the ambition being shown behind the scenes.
“Everyone knows how ambitious our owner is, and I'm grateful to him for showing belief in me and showing belief in the club,” Williams said.
“The future is exciting. It's a privilege to be playing for a football club with fans like the Forest fans.”
Forest endured a difficult campaign last season, eventually finishing 16th in the Premier League, just five points clear of the relegation zone.
However, there is renewed optimism following significant upheaval in the dugout.
TURBULENT TIMES
Portuguese boss Vitor Pereira was appointed on an 18-month deal after the departures of Nuno Espirito Santo, Ange Postecoglou and Sean Dyche during a turbulent period for the club.
Retaining key stars has become a priority as Forest look to climb the table next season. The club are determined to keep hold of both Morgan Gibbs-White and Elliot Anderson despite growing interest from elsewhere.
Anderson, in particular, has attracted attention from both Manchester City and Manchester United, but Forest have sent a clear message by placing a staggering £100million valuation on the young midfielder. The club have put together a contingency plan of potential replacements if they do lose the England international midfielder.
Now, with Williams seemingly next in line for a bumper new deal, Forest are showing they have no intention of letting their prized assets leave cheaply.
Editor's Insight
Forest moving early to tie down Neco Williams feels more about control than necessity, especially with interest building across the Premier League. It signals a shift towards long-term squad stability rather than reactive selling, something Forest have struggled with in past windows.
