Promoted Hull City and Everton are both interested in signing Fulham midfielder Sander Berge as the race for the Norwegian international begins to gather pace, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
Berge has emerged as a target for both clubs ahead of the new Premier League campaign, with the 28-year-old understood to be considering his future following Marco Silva's departure from Fulham to Benfica earlier this summer.
The powerful defensive midfielder still has three years remaining on his contract at Craven Cottage, but sources suggest he is contemplating a move as he looks to take the next step in his career.
Manchester United have also been linked with Berge during the transfer window, although the Old Trafford club are believed to be prioritising a move for Mateus Fernandes.
Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott is also thought to be among the options being considered by United as they look to strengthen in the middle of the park.
That could leave the door open for Hull and Everton to make their move, with tentative talks understood to be ongoing as interest in the experienced midfielder continues to grow.
REPUTATION
Berge has built a strong reputation in English football since arriving from Belgium.
After making his name with Sheffield United, he went on to feature for Burnley before joining Fulham, where he has enjoyed two solid seasons in the Premier League.
His composure on the ball, physical presence and ability to break up opposition attacks have made him one of the most reliable holding midfielders in the top flight, while his experience could prove invaluable for either club.
Hull are keen to add proven Premier League quality to their squad following promotion, while Everton are also looking to strengthen their midfield options as they prepare for a new era under their revamped set-up.
EXPERIENCE
The former Sheffield United and Burnley star has represented Norway at every youth level and has gone on to win 67 senior caps for his country, establishing himself as a key figure for the national team.
Berge remains under contract at Fulham, and no formal agreement has yet been reached with any interested club.
But with Everton and Hull both monitoring the situation closely, and the player believed to be open to a fresh challenge, this is one transfer story that could gather significant momentum in the coming weeks.
Editor's Insight
Berge looks most likely to stay in the Premier League, with Everton currently edging the race due to their need for an experienced holding midfielder. Hull remain an ambitious outside punt following promotion, but the Toffees feel the safer bet in what is shaping up to be a tight market.
