Danny Röhl is eyeing up a raid of former club Sheffield Wednesday this summer, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
The Rangers’ boss wants to be reunited with former stopper Pierce Charles as he looks to strengthen his squad in Glasgow, our sources have been told.
Owls' keeper Charles has a high ceiling and further showcased his talents with a spirited display as Northern Ireland’s hopes of World Cup qualification were shattered during a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Italy.
The 20-year-old is contracted at Hillsborough until 2027 and will only have a year left on his deal come the end of the season.
And with the Owls’ current situation, Rangers believe they can get a cut-price deal for the bright prospect.
Reunion
Röhl was mightily impressed with Charles’ potential during his time at the club and believes he can convince the player to switch north of the border.
The chance to compete for Scottish honours at this stage of his career is believed to be an opportunity which will prove alluring for Northern Ireland’s number one.
There are understood to be a number of potential suitors for Charles' services this summer.
He was close to moving to Strasbourg during the winter window before a shoulder injury, almost the same niggle which he suffered to the opposite shoulder earlier in the campaign, scuppered that move. He had previously been linked with a move to Rangers, but their interest has now progressed significantly.
With Sheffield Wednesday’s ownership saga still up in the air, one of the big first decisions to make will be whether to sell their most prized asset or try to tie him down to a new deal.
After being released by the Manchester City academy in 2021, he began sporadically training with the Owls before signing a deal in 2022.
He made his debut for the club under Röhl in 2024 and has made 30 appearances for the South Yorkshire outfit.
