There is a four-way tussle for Southampton striker Adam Armstrong heading into the final days of the transfer window, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

Our sources understand Saints’ bosses are desperately trying to get a new front man through the door as interest in their star striker rapidly intensifies.

Middlesbrough and Wrexham have both tabled eight-figure bids for the former Newcastle United hitman as they chase promotion with Southampton understood to have fielded a number of offers from elsewhere in the league and abroad.

Stoke City are also interested with Mark Robins currently in the midst of a frustrating injury crisis, but our sources understand they are set to miss out on the in-form marksman.

It is understood Armstrong remains on Ipswich Town’s striker shortlist, but Nashville FC’s Sam Surridge remains their top target and focus will only shift towards Armstrong should the Surridge signing fall through.

Sheffield United had also been credited with an interest in Armstrong, but those rumours have since cooled with Chris Wilder understood to be content with his current strike force following the free-transfer signing of Patrick Bamford.

Key To Promotion?

Armstrong is joint second in the Championship scoring charts with Swansea City’s Zan Vipotnik the only player who has more than his 11 this term.

The 28-year-old helped fire the Saints to the Premier League two seasons ago with 21 goals and there is hope among his suitors that his added firepower will be the difference in terms of their fate for next season come May.

Armstrong has been a prolific Championship hitman over the years, but has struggled for goals in the top flight and wants another crack at the promised land.

With the Saints languishing in lower mid-table and the likelihood of promotion being a distant dream the south coast club’s bosses are ready to cash in on the striker.

And they are working on bringing in a cut-price replacement to cover his loss of goals up front.

Armstrong will have a year left on his Saints’ deal in June with chiefs at St Mary’s believing the time is right to end his near five-year stay at the club.
