Oldham Athletic are among a number of League Two clubs monitoring Scunthorpe United’s Oli Ewing, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

The talented 23-year-old signed a one-year deal with the Iron after being released by Championship Leicester City at the end of last season.

Midfielder Ewing has turned down a new deal with the club, who are currently sat in the National League play-off spots, and our sources have been told that has put a number of EFL clubs on high alert.

It is understood Scunthorpe, who are bidding to return to League Two after they endured back-to-back relegations from the fourth tier to National League North in the 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons, have offered the midfield maestro an improved deal to stay beyond the end of campaign.

Ewing is understandably waiting until the season ends and wants to be back playing in the Football League next term after impressing since his release from the Foxes.

It is understood there are a number of clubs in League Two ready to pounce if the Iron fail to win promotion.

The Latics are understood to be keeping a close eye on their progress this term ahead of a swoop for the player, whilst at least three unnamed clubs have sent scouts to watch Ewing play this season.

Welshman Ewing has two goals and two assists this season, but it's his overall dominance in midfield that has led to increased interest.

In other League Two news, SportsBoom’s sources correctly revealed Elliott Nevitt’s move from Gillingham to promotion-chasing Cambridge United.

Earned His Way Back To EFL

Ewing came through the ranks at Fulham and then moved to Leicester to be a part of their U21 squad and earned himself a professional contract at the Foxes.

He went sent out on loan to sixth-tier Buxton at the backend of last season and scored three goals in 17 league starts.

The form he showed at Buxton saw a number of clubs fight it out for his services once he was released by Leicester, but Scunthorpe ultimately won the battle.
