Luton Town are pushing for a sensational Elliot Lee return this month, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
The playmaker is surplus to requirements at Wrexham this season and is allowed to leave on loan this month in his search for regular game time.
Lee was in Phil Parkinson’s Championship plans, but underwent knee surgery earlier in the campaign which saw him drop down the pecking order.
Our sources understand a number of League One clubs have approached the Red Dragons this month, including both Blackpool and Bolton Wanderers, with a move failing to fall into place.
But it is understood Kenilworth Road bosses have approached the Championship outfit this week about the prospect of Lee returning to the Hatters until the end of the season.
The 31-year-old, who made over 100 appearances for Luton, memorably helped Town go from League Two to the Championship with back-to-back promotions.
Lee went from Luton to Wrexham and helped the Welsh outfit to their unprecedented promotion hat-trick as the Hollywood-backed club soared from the National League to the Championship.
Meanwhile, Lee isn't the only Wrexham promotion star set for a January exit, as Bradford City enter advanced talks to bring striker Paul Mullin on loan following a tough spell at Wigan Athletic.
Busy Few Days
Wrexham are trying to trim their squad with a number of players available to leave on loan and permanently before the window ends.
James McClean returned to Ireland earlier this month, whilst defender Conor Coady went on loan to Charlton Athletic.
Speaking about Lee’s future Parkinson said: “He wants to go on loan and get some game time so we respect that.”
“There was a club which was very close to agreeing a deal and they've gone elsewhere for a different profile of player, but I'm sure there'll be other clubs looking at Elliot.”
“We've got to cut the squad down to 25, there's no doubt about that.”
“But that's the rule so we'll be assessing that as we go along in the next couple of weeks.”
