Eredivisie rivals PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord are prepared to to go head to head off the pitch for Sheffield United star Gustavo Hamer this summer, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
The Blades' attacker has been the subject of intense speculation this month, with clubs both in England and Italy known to be interested in acquiring his services.
But a return to the Netherlands, where he was raised as a child after his family emigrated from Brazil, remains Hamer’s preferred option as he approaches the end of his contract in South Yorkshire.
That has alerted two of the Eredivisie’s biggest names to the possibility of recruiting him once the Championship season draws to a close.
Hamer actually started his professional career at De Kuip, and the opportunity to finish it with Robin van Persie’s side has an obvious appeal; particularly with his former Blades team mate Anel Ahmedhodzic also in situ.
However, Peter Bosz’s team are arguably the dominant force in Dutch football right now which, given their Champions League status, also makes them a desirable destination.
Chris Wilder, the United manager, has urged Hamer to complete the present Championship campaign before considering his options. The mutual respect which exists between the two men means, unless a life-changing offer materialises this month, the former Coventry City forward is minded to grant Wilder his wish.
Sheffield United also face the prospect of losing right-back Femi Seriki, with the 21-year-old entering the final 18 months of his contract and Everton understood to be monitoring his situation as a contingency should their proposed move for Genoa’s Brooke Norton-Cuffy fail to materialise.
Verbal Agreement
Sources close to the Blades have told SportsBoom that the pair have reached an understanding which would see Hamer’s exit rubber-stamped should one of the Netherlands’ big clubs come calling, allowing him to be closer to his family and children.
United signed Hamer for a reported fee of £15m from Coventry City following their promotion to the Premier League in 2023.
Having put pen to paper on a four year deal, the one-time Holland youth and under-20 international is set to become a free agent at the end of next season although, given their struggle to identify new investment, the Blades’ hierarchy would rather negotiate a deal before he enters the final 12 months of that agreement - not least because, having held talks with Wilder, they are aware of Hamer’s desire to head home.
