Blackburn are preparing a second bid for former Leeds United striker Sam Greenwood after seeing an opening offer knocked back by Polish side Pogon Szczecin, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
Rovers had a bid worth £1million plus add-ons rejected over the weekend, but remain determined to land the 24-year-old as they step up their summer recruitment drive.
Tony Mowbray, who returned to Ewood Park earlier this month after Blackburn failed to secure Michael O'Neill permanently following his successful interim spell that helped steer the club clear of relegation, is eager to strengthen his attacking options ahead of the new Championship season, with the addition of a striker high on his list of priorities.
Blackburn are now expected to return with an improved offer in an attempt to persuade Pogon to part with the frontman, who still has plenty of admirers in England.
Greenwood began his career at Sunderland before progressing through the academy systems at Arsenal and Leeds United.
EXPERIENCE
He eventually broke into the first-team picture at Elland Road and gained valuable Premier League experience during Leeds' time in the top flight.
The striker also built up a strong Championship pedigree during loan spells at Middlesbrough and Preston North End, featuring regularly for both clubs and showcasing the versatility that has made him an attractive target for Blackburn.
After leaving Leeds last year, Greenwood moved to Poland to join Pogon Szczecin and scored three goals in 20 appearances in the Ekstraklasa.
While his goal return was modest, his experience across both the Premier League and Championship continues to make him a sought-after option in the second tier.
BUSINESS
Mowbray is eager to strengthen quickly as Blackburn looks to avoid a drawn-out summer of transfer business.
The Rovers boss wants the bulk of his squad in place as early as possible, and increasing the team's firepower has emerged as the key focus of the club's recruitment plans.
With the transfer window now open, Blackburn are expected to push ahead with negotiations and test Pogon's resolve with an improved bid in the coming days as they attempt to bring Greenwood back to English football.
Editor's Insight
Blackburn will likely need to stretch beyond their £1m-plus offer, with a realistic acceptance point probably closer to £2–3m, including add-ons given Greenwood’s age, pedigree and contract situation. Anything in that range feels more aligned with Pogon’s valuation than a cut-price deal.
