This game is likely to be difficult to call, as going into Christmas, just one place separates them in the table. Their opponents, Villa, have been on a magnificent run of form, winning all of their last 10 matches in all competitions. It’s been quite a turnaround since the start of the season, when Unai Emery’s team failed to win any of their first six games in all competitions, scoring just two goals. They sit third at the time of writing, three points behind league leaders Arsenal.

Chelsea Current Form - DLWWD
Chelsea’s inconsistent form is reflective of how they have performed throughout the season. The run in the last five games began with an uneventful 0-0 draw at Bournemouth, before a 2-1 defeat away to Atalanta in the Champions League.
A solid 2-0 win at home to Everton followed, and then an unconvincing 1-3 win in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup at Cardiff City. Enzo Maresca’s team would then have been encouraged in their comeback from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Newcastle United last Saturday, in what was a very mixed performance.
Key Players to Watch
- Cole Palmer: Injuries have prevented the attacking midfielder from finding his top form this season, but if he can get going, he will be extremely important to Chelsea’s season. Palmer scored a beauty of a goal in this fixture last season.
- Moises Caicedo: The Ecuadorian has gradually become one of the most consistently performing defensive midfielders in the Premier League.
- Joao Pedro: The Brazilian has six goals to his name this season, including one in the last match at Newcastle. Pedro will be looking to stake a claim to remain in the team when centre-forward Liam Delap returns from injury.
Chelsea Team News
Chelsea are continuing to monitor the fitness of winger Estevao Willian, who has missed the last two games with a muscle issue. Maresca has said both Estevao and Delap, who himself has been out with a shoulder injury, are probably going to be available.
Centre-back Levi Colwill and midfielder Romeo Lavia are longer-term absentees.
Aston Villa Current Form – WWWWW
Villa have catapulted themselves into a potential title race with faultless form. They have also shown plenty of resilience, and in the first of the last five games, they came back from 2-0 down to win 3-4 at Brighton.
A last-gasp winner from Emi Buendia then followed in a significant 2-1 home win over Arsenal, before a 1-2 win at Basel in the Europa League. The Villains then came back from behind twice at West Ham to triumph 2-3, before a second consecutive brace from Morgan Rogers helped them to a 2-1 win at home to Manchester United.
Key Players to Watch
- Morgan Rogers: Rogers is in scintillating form, having scored four goals in the last two games. The attacking midfielder is proving himself to be a match-winner who can create moments of magic.
- Ian Maatsen: The left-back is returning to his former club, having recently started to find a regular place in Emery’s team. The Dutchman may feel a point to prove to the hosts.
- Ollie Watkins: Despite his team’s magnificent form, the forward is yet to really get going this season, with three goals in 24 games. Watkins did score the winner in Villa’s last win at Chelsea two seasons ago, though.
Aston Villa Team News
Loanee Jadon Sancho missed out on the last game against his parent club, Manchester United, but he can return to action against the team he was on loan at last season.
Centre-backs Tyrone Mings and Pau Torres are likely to miss out through injury, and midfielder Harvey Elliott has been missing recently with illness. Former Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley is also currently on the injured list.

Both teams to score: Aston Villa have scored and conceded in each of their last five games (William Hill 4/6)
Morgan Rogers to score any time: Rogers has scored four goals in the last two games and has notched three braces in his last eight games (Bzeebet 61/20)

Value Bets
Half time/full time – Chelsea/Aston Villa: Villa have come from behind to win in each of their last three Premier League away games (BetMGM 28/1)
Chelsea to win to nil: Chelsea won to nil in this fixture last season, and have kept eight clean sheets in the Premier League this season; only Arsenal have kept more (Betway 12/5)
Aston Villa to win and both teams to score: This would have applied to seven of Villa’s last eight matches (Midnite 6/1)
Prediction: Over 2.5 goals
Aston Villa’s games are bringing excitement at both ends of the pitch, and with Chelsea tending to find the net at home, we can see this one producing a minimum of three goals.
