Tottenham vs Aston Villa FA Cup Preview: Odds, Tips & Predictions

Date: Saturday, January 10 Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium Kick-off: 5:45pm GMT Tottenham and Aston Villa renew hostilities, this time in the FA Cup third round on Saturday, January 10. One of the picks of the weekend from a neutral perspective, both sides will set their sights on advancing to the next round. With 15 wins between them, Tottenham and Villa have enjoyed plenty of success in England’s grandest domestic competition, and the third round represents the starting point for the involvement of Premier League clubs. Villa came out on top when they faced Tottenham in the fourth round of the FA Cup last term, clinching a 2-1 win, and Unai Emery’s charges were also 2-1 victors when they last visited North London in the league back in October.

Head-to-Head Record

Before any game, regardless of the competition, the head-to-head record offers some fascinating insights into both teams and how they might fare. Let’s see how FA Cup matches between Tottenham and Villa have unfolded over the years.

Last Five Meetings (FA Cup)

  • 09/02/25: Aston Villa 2-1 Tottenham
  • 08/01/17: Tottenham 2-0 Aston Villa
  • 14/01/92: Tottenham 0-1 Aston Villa
  • 05/01/92: Aston Villa 0-0 Tottenham
  • 13/02/82: Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa

Tottenham Current Form – LLWDD

Eight-time FA Cup winners Tottenham put together some form over the festive period, which included a crucial win away to Crystal Palace (1-0) in the Premier League. It would have been by a more comfortable margin, had it not been for a couple of Richarlison strikes overturned by VAR.

There will have been disappointment in the camp following the 1-1 draw at home to Sunderland last weekend, but the injuries aren’t slowing down, as Mohammed Kudus was pulled off with a suspected thigh problem.

Thomas Frank has come under scrutiny. However, he would relish a good run in the competition as his side last lifted the FA Cup back in 1991.

Key Players to Watch

  • Richarlison
Under Frank, Richarlison has improved markedly this term, netting eight times in all competitions. He has been hungry, chasing seemingly lost causes, and he has been much sharper in front of goal, so Villa will need to keep close tabs on him.
  • Micky van de Ven
Micky van de Ven has a brilliant engine, and he can surge forward with his driving runs. Aerially commanding, the Dutchman has chipped in with five goals in all comps, a superb return for a centre-back.
  • Archie Gray
Okay, there was the blemish at Nottingham Forest where he was careless misplacing a back pass, but Archie Gray has a mature head for a young player, and his work rate is terrific. He could give Villa something to think about.

Tottenham Team News

After Brennan Johnson joined Crystal Palace in the January transfer window, the sight of Kudus disappearing down the tunnel for a suspected thigh injury after receiving treatment was disconcerting. Tottenham don’t have a natural right winger to replace him, so Frank may have a selection dilemma.

Aston Villa Form – WWWLW

Bar the 4-1 hammering at Arsenal before the New Year, Villa are showing no signs of fading in the Premier League title race, and they continue to be the great entertainers.

Over the past fortnight, Villa have shown remarkable powers of recovery, as demonstrated in the league when they came from 1-0 down away to Chelsea before pulling off a 2-1 win, courtesy of an Ollie Watkins double.

Emery’s men are mentally strong, and a strong run in the FA Cup will be much appreciated.

Key Players to Watch

  • Ollie Watkins
Ollie Watkins is back to his best, and he has been in a rich vein of form, scoring four times in his past three league outings. He last netted against Tottenham in the league in November 2023, so he would love to fire home against them, this time in the FA Cup.
  • Morgan Rogers
Often Villa’s saviour this season, Morgan Rogers has been stunning, scoring sublime long-range goals. He’s netted three times in Villa’s past four meetings with Tottenham in all comps, so he could be a thorn in the home side once again.
  • John McGinn
The midfield maestro orchestrates many of the attacks, and he scored a double in the 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest in the Premier League last weekend. The Scot often plays a starring role in the big games.

Aston Villa Team News

Villa have a significant injury list. This includes Amadou Onana (hamstring), and there are no firm indications as to when he may return to action.

Predicted Line-Ups

This is how Tottenham and Aston Villa could line up for their FA Cup contest:

  1. Tottenham (4-2-3-1)

Vicario; Porro, Romero, van de Ven, Davies, Bentancur, Gray, Bergvall, Odobert, Tel; Richarlison

  2. Aston Villa (4-2-3-1)

Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Lindelof, Maatsen, Kamara, Tielemans, McGinn, Rogers, Buendia; Watkins

Suggested Bets

We’ve had a closer look at the offerings of some of the finest Premier League betting sites that are also well versed in advertising FA Cup lines to see what is worth exploring further.

  1. Over 2.5 Goals: Clashes between Tottenham and Villa are often frenetic, with the Over 2.5 goals line hit in five of the past six meetings. This line is worth jumping on. (5/6 with Betfred)

  2. Both Teams to Score: Although there have been some one-sided results in the league, the FA Cup has often provided plenty of goalmouth action, and the BTTS market is appealing. (13/20 with Bet442)

  3. Aston Villa to Win in Regular Time: Replays were scrapped last season, so if the scores are level after 90 minutes, extra-time and penalties ensue. Villa got the job done in normal time last season, and this is carrying shortish odds. (8/5 with Betway)

Value Bets

  1. Aston Villa to Win & BTTS: Villa have a good record against Tottenham in the FA Cup, so combining Villa to win & BTTS could be worth latching onto. (9/2 with William Hill)

  2. Anytime Goalscorer – Morgan Rogers: It’s fair to assert that Rogers relishes facing Tottenham, and he’s hurt them over the years. He could get on the scoresheet once again. (5/2 with BetMGM)

  3. Villa Total Corners Over 5.5: Villa have fulfilled this line in two of their past three matches with Tottenham, so this is worth checking out. (33/20 with Leovegas)

Prediction: Aston Villa to Win in Regular Time

All-Premier League clashes in the early stage of the FA Cup are rarely anti-climactic, and while Tottenham have tried to turn things around, Villa have the bit between their teeth. Given their exceptional form in the league, Villa have been flying, and they have plenty of attacking weapons. They beat Tottenham 2-1 in the FA Cup last season, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if they prevailed again within 90 minutes.
