Exclusive: Blackburn Knocked Back in Pursuit of League One Top Scorer Kyle Wootton

Blackburn Rovers have been unsuccessful in trying to sign League One top scorer Kyle Wootton, with a bid for Reyes Cleary also rejected. Wootton's 15 goals for Stockport County have attracted interest from other clubs, potentially leading to a transfer at the end of the season.

Blackburn Rovers have been turned down in an approach for League One top scorer Kyle Wootton, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

Rovers have been in the market to bolster their attacking options all winter and have been rebuffed in approaches for a number of targets during a frustrating window.

Our sources understand they had tabled the highest bid for Barnsley winger Reyes Cleary, but were priced out of a move.

They have also seen bids turned down by Sheffield Wednesday for Bailey Cadamarteri

It is understood Rovers have enquired about the availability of Stockport County’s Wootton, with the third-tier outfit adamant he is not for sale.

Wootton is seen as key to Dave Challinor’s hopes of getting Stockport promoted to the Championship for the first time since being relegated from the old First Division in 2002.

The Stockport striker has fired in 15 league goals this term, with his effort at the weekend a timely reminder of his talents, and is joint top scorer in the division alongside Leyton Orient’s Dom Ballard.

Part Of Stockport Journey

Wootton has never been tested at Championship level, but has been one of the Football League’s consistent goal getters in recent years.

Valerian Ismael is under pressure at Ewood Park with Rovers battling relegation and knows he needs reinforcements to avoid the drop.

Wootton signed for the Hatters as a free agent in 2022 and was named Player of the Year after his first campaign at the club, where he scored 14 goals in 42 league games.

That season earned him a new three-year deal at the club in 2024 and he scored eight league goals a the Hatters earned promotion to League One in the 2023/24 campaign.

Wootton will only have a year left on his current deal come the end of the season, with a number of Championship clubs expected to come in for the player if Stockport fail to go up.
