Peter Wild is in line for a quick return to Football League management with Morecambe, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
National League relegation candidates Morecambe are looking for a successor to Ashvir Singh Johal, who was sacked today, and see former Barrow and Fleetwood boss Wild as a safer pair of hands.
Singh became the first Sikh to manage a professional British club after the Shrimps were saved from liquidation last summer by the Panjab Warriors consortium.
But what was considered a gamble by some, especially following on from ’Mr Morecambe’ Derek Adams’ third spell in charge, hasn’t paid off.
And the club, home town of former world heavyweight boxing champion, Tyson Fury, and comedy legend, Eric Morecambe, are second bottom of the fifth tier, five points from safety.
Singh won only five of his 28 games in charge, while Wild was sacked earlier this month after 13 months at League Two Fleetwood.
During his time at Holker Street, he took the Cumbrians to the brink of the EFL play-offs in 2024, only to be released during the summer for an apparent clash of football philosophies.
Barrow are now on their fourth permanent/interim manager since Wild departed.
EXPERIENCE
The 41-year-old has plenty of National League experience. Indeed, his work with Halifax brought him to the attention of Barrow bosses.
He also took charge of Oldham Athletic and masterminded a famous 2-1 FA Cup win over Fulham at Craven Cottage.
Veteran Simon Grayson, who has taken charge of three Lancashire clubs in his career, is also understood to be under consideration.
He has been out of work since losing his job at Morecambe’s National League rivals, Hartlepool United.
Grayson enjoyed better success at Leeds, Preston and Blackpool while also taking charge briefly of Fleetwood.
Morecambe fans would love to see Scot Adams back for an unprecedented fourth spell.
Despite his affection for the club, he’s unlikely to leave his job as Plymouth’s Director of Football where he and manager Tom Cleverley have the Pilgrims pushing for the League One play-off places after a six game unbeaten run.
