Salford City are plotting a surprise move for Wrexham’s Paul Mullin, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
The Red Dragons’ promotion hero is on the lookout for a new club after seeing his Wigan Athletic loan move cut short earlier this month.
League One Wigan opted to trigger the break clause in the deal after the 31-year-old hitman hit five goals in 26 appearances in all competitions.
He started the season well with four goals in his first ten league outings before a substantial drop off saw him net just once since mid September.
The ambitious Ammies have put themselves in play-off contention once again this term and our sources understand they want to add Mullin’s firepower to help secure them a long-awaited promotion to League One.
It is understood Mullin wants to play at the highest possible level, but it remains unclear if he will be offered a route back to League One this window.
Bolton Wanderers were linked with a pursuit of the striker, but our sources understand he is not a player on their radar.
Wrexham Hero
Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson is at the forefront of the club handling the striker’s exit carefully as they have done with all of their promotion heroes in recent windows.
Earlier this season, the club cancelled Ollie Palmer’s contract by mutual consent to help him secure a free transfer to Swindon Town.
Mullin, who fired Cambridge United into League One before dropping to non-league, played a huge part at the start of the Hollywood-backed club’s journey to their historic promotion hat-trick.
The marksman, who has scored 110 times for the club, smashed 38 goals in 46 games to win the National League between 24 goals the following campaign as the club secured the second of three straight promotions.
Boss Phil Parkinson said: “It’s that situation where we need to find the right route for him from now until the end of the season and we’re working with him on that.”
