Olympique de Marseille are preparing for a significant summer squad clearance after missing out on UEFA Champions League qualification, with the financial impact forcing a shift in transfer strategy.

The Ligue 1 side are now expected to sell several players they would ideally prefer to keep, as the club moves to stabilise its balance sheet.

One of the most high-profile names emerging in this “liquidation” process is Dutch midfielder Quinten Timber, who has quickly become a key figure in Marseille’s transfer planning despite only arriving a matter of months ago.

Premier League Interest Intensifies

Timber joined Marseille from Feyenoord last January and signed a long-term deal running until 2030. However, his stay in France could be short-lived, with strong interest already building from England.

Aston Villa are currently believed to be leading the chase, having placed Timber at the top of their midfield shortlist.

Meanwhile, Crystal Palace have also entered the race, viewing the 24-year-old as a strong option to strengthen their squad depth.

Timber is understood to be open to a move to the Premier League, with the player viewing England as an attractive next step in his career.

Profile, Price and Performance

Despite making only 1,100 minutes of Ligue 1 appearances this season, Timber has already established himself as a regular starter in the Marseille midfield. He ended the campaign with an average match rating of 6.84, reflecting a steady if understated impact.

While the numbers may not immediately stand out, Timber’s value lies in his all-action profile. As a box-to-box midfielder, he contributes both defensively and offensively, breaking up play, linking possession under pressure, and making late runs into attacking areas. His versatility and tactical intelligence have made him a modern midfield asset.

Marseille’s current valuation sits at around €25 million, though reports suggest they are likely to demand closer to €30 million. Even so, their weakened financial position following European qualification failure may limit their ability to hold firm in negotiations.

Family Link and Transfer Race

Timber also carries a notable connection to English football through his twin brother, Jurrien Timber, who plays for Arsenal. That link is seen as a potential advantage in easing adaptation should he make the switch to England.

With both Villa and Palace preparing to formalise their interest, Marseille are expected to receive concrete offers in the coming weeks, setting up a competitive Premier League battle for the Dutch midfielder’s signature.

Aston Villa are in the market for a central midfielder, with Celta Vigo’s Ilaix Moriba also on their radar, making it unlikely they pursue both options. With Champions League football secured next season, Villa hold a clear edge over Crystal Palace in the race for Quinten Timber. If they do move, they would be strong favourites at a fee in the region of €30 million.
