The self-proclaimed ’strongest’ darts player in the world, Lukas Wenig, made history at the 2025 Grand Slam of Darts, becoming only the sixth German player ever to reach a televised PDC quarterfinal.

From Gym to Oche

Before this week, Wenig’s only appearance on a PDC televised stage was at the UK Open. But in Wolverhampton, he has emerged as a surprise contender for the title, defeating his friend and fellow German Niko Springer 10-8 to secure his quarterfinal spot.

After his breakthrough performance, we spoke to Wenig, who revealed the sporting passion that first drew him into darts and how he now balances it with his love for powerlifting.

At 31, Wenig has been playing professional darts since 2017. Before that, his main sporting pursuit was powerlifting, which is evident from his muscular build.

"I was a power lifter some years before [he started playing darts] and now I only go to the gym and try to keep my muscles on a level,” Wenig told SportsBoom.co.uk.

He explained how his training at the gym complements his darts practice rather than hinders it. The typical post-workout aches, which might affect arm and back strength and composure, have actually enhanced his game.

"It improved my game really. It helps me to get stronger, to feel more confident.”

Wenig also shared his routine for balancing weight training with practice on the oche: "I find the balance to go to the gym, do one-and-a-half-hour workout and after that I go on the practise board breakfast border. I find my way to keep both going together.”

While Wenig never competed professionally in powerlifting, he still draws inspiration from his best friend, who is aiming for the German national team.

“No, my best friend is a powerlifter who's going for the national team and he's inspired me. It’s great when we work out together.”

"Gerwyn Price Inspired Me"

Wenig credits former world champion Gerwyn Price for sparking his interest in darts, admiring both Price’s physical presence and his ability to balance gym work with darts.

“Gerwyn [Price] is a great inspiration for me."

“You see it without players; they’re going to the gym to get fitter.”

"He inspired me, now I’m doing it my way.”

With a playful nod to his muscular advantage, Wenig joked about his title as the ’strongest darts player in the world,’ especially in light of Price’s recent weight loss.

“After Gerwyn has lost some weight maybe."
