Vinicius Junior’s representatives have lifted the lid on the summer transfer saga that, for a few weeks, looked like it could take the Real Madrid winger to the Premier League champions.
Speaking to SportsBoom, two senior figures at Roc Nation Sports International, the agency that represents the 26-year-old, confirmed that Arsenal made a serious and aggressive play for him. But they insist comfort, loyalty and a desire to keep winning in Madrid were always going to win out.
Vinicius ended the speculation in early August by agreeing to an extension that ties him to Real Madrid until June 2032, with the club announcing the deal on Thursday 6 August and declining to disclose the financial terms.
Comfort at the pinnacle club
Grant Veitch, Director of African Football Recruitment at Roc Nation Sports International, believes the key to Vinicius’ decision lies in how early he arrived in the Spanish capital. The winger joined from Flamengo in July 2018, aged 18, for a fee reported at around €45m.
“With Vini, he went to Madrid at a very young age, and I think there’s an element of comfort, wanting to be there and wanting to build something at Real Madrid,” Veitch told SportsBoom.co.uk.
“He has competition for places, but it is the pinnacle club. I tell all my clients, you’ve only made it once you’ve played in a Champions League final for Real Madrid.”
Vinicius has done considerably more than that. Since arriving, he has scored 128 goals in 375 appearances and helped Madrid to 14 trophies, including three LaLiga titles and two Champions League crowns.
Veitch acknowledged that Vinicius had options elsewhere, but said his status at the Bernabéu was decisive.
“There were other opportunities that arose. But I think the level of comfort he has, and him already being a star at Real Madrid, it kept him there, and he wanted to stay.”
“You can branch out, but I think the comfort level of him being there since such a young age and wanting to build up his reputation and wanting to continue that and win more titles with Real Madrid, that’s the main reason he’s stayed.”
Arsenal rolled out the red carpet
Michael Yormack, President at Roc Nation Sports International, was candid about the strength of Arsenal’s interest.
“You saw the news; Arsenal was very involved. They were very aggressive,” Yormack told SportsBoom.co.uk.
“But to Grant’s point, Vini’s heart is in Madrid, that’s where he’s always wanted to be, and that’s where he is, and that’s where he hopes to be for the rest of his career. I don't think there was ever a question.”
Yormack did not, however, pretend that the approach from Mikel Arteta’s side was brushed aside.
“Did he ever seriously consider Arsenal? I mean of course. When a team like Arsenal rolls out the red carpet for you and makes you feel really wanted, then obviously you have to listen.”
“But he’s where he wants to be and we’re happy, he’s there. It’s not often that an athlete gets to start their professional journey at one team, and end it there as well.”
“He started his journey at 18, he’s 26 now. He’s already won so many trophies. To be at one club, the best club in the world, for your entire career, that would be very special.”
The new contract would take Vinicius to the age of 31, effectively covering the rest of his peak years at the club.
How the summer saga unfolded
The Arsenal links gathered pace in late July. Sky Sports reported on 26 July that the Gunners were exploring a deal as part of a wider search for a left-sided forward, with Julian Alvarez, Yan Diomande and Bradley Barcola also on their list. At that stage there had been no club-to-club contact.
Vinicius was entering the final 12 months of his previous deal, which ran until 2027, and talks over a renewal had stalled.
According to Marca, Real Madrid told his representatives that their latest offer was final, and that the club would consider selling him that summer if he did not accept it.
The speculation peaked in the first week of August. Many sources claimed that personal terms had been agreed in principle, while European football expert Julien Laurens refused to rule out a move on Sky Sports given that no new deal had been signed.
Within days, the saga was over. Vinicius put pen to paper on the extension shortly after a World Cup in which he scored four goals and provided one assist for Brazil before their round of 16 exit to Norway.
A difficult start to the new deal
The opening months of the new contract have not gone to plan.
Vinicius has managed one goal and three assists in 10 matches in all competitions this season and was sent off against Villarreal for pulling Nathan Saliba’s hair. The resulting four-match ban rules him out of El Clásico against Barcelona.
Real Madrid head coach Jose Mourinho then raised eyebrows by suggesting, in comments reported by ESPN, that he himself would probably have left in Vinicius’ position.
“Last summer I would have forced my exit,” Mourinho said, citing the treatment the winger has received. He later clarified that Vinicius re-signed because Madrid is his home, and praised the player’s mental strength for staying.
Those remarks are unlikely to revive Arsenal’s hopes any time soon.
With Vinicius tied down until 2032 and his agency publicly framing Madrid as the place he wants to end his career, any future move would require a dramatic change of heart from both the player and the club.
