Are Lightning Variants of Live Casino Games Actually Better Value?
Lightning variants have become one of the most popular takes on casino classics. Roulette is the most commonly ‘revamped’ lightning game, but baccarat and blackjack all have lightning variants too.

Are Lightning Casino Games Better Value
The core mechanism behind all of them is adding in large multipliers, by altering the maths model elsewhere to swallow up the additional hit. The result is a high volatility game that ups the excitement of traditional live casino games - but are lightning variants better value?
The Maths Rarely Favour Lightning Variants
If your definition of value is getting the highest theoretical return for your money, then lightning variants almost never compete with the traditional version. Evolution’s European roulette variants are an easy place to start. They’re some of the industry’s favourites, and there are plenty of live variants to compare:
- Live Lightning Roulette: 29:1 on a straight up bet - or with multiplier 499:1 [1]
- Live Auto Roulette: 35:1 on a straight-up bet [2]
That big potential additional payout is being paid for by the reduced payout on straight up bets. This means that while live European roulette usually has a house edge of 2.70%, in Lightning roulette variants, it can be as low as 2.10%.
It’s not a massive difference, but it very neatly shows exactly where those massive multiplier wins are coming from - and it’s not thin air.
Factoring in Volatility and Play Time
Understanding RTP is important, but it’s not enough on its own to tell you everything you need to know about value, even pure mathematical value. The most common misconception is that with an RTP of 97% for every £100 staked, you'll receive £97 back during a typical session. But that’s not exactly how it works.
RTP is worked out over hundreds of thousands of spins or hands. Unless you’ve got an exceptionally large bankroll, you’re looking at a tiny fraction of that number. That means that in order to estimate more accurately what your returns on your average Friday night roulette session might be, you need to take volatility into account, too.
If RTP tells you how much a game theoretically returns. Volatility tells you how that return is distributed.
How Volatility Works?
Traditional roulette tends to produce a steadier experience with wins and losses broadly aligning with what you might expect and a few of those 35/1 wins that feel momentous. Traditional live blackjack is similar, with a 3/1 win for a natural and a 1:1 for any other win.
Lightning variants redistribute that - quite a lot. In lightning blackjack, it’s up to 25:1 payouts instead of 1:1 and lightning roulette is up to 500:1 [3].
That means a larger share of the theoretical return becomes tied to the much rarer multiplier events. Your sessions can therefore feel exceptionally quiet and just occasionally produce a massive hit. The highs are definitely higher, but they tend to arrive much less frequently. That’s high volatility at work.
All this means is that two games can sit within touching distance of each other in terms of RTP and still produce wildly different experiences at the table.
The problem is when those massive wins land. If you’ve got an unlimited bankroll, you can play for long enough for things to even out - but most of us don’t. That means you might end up totally depleting your bankroll, before having a chance to hit the multiplier. In standard live casino games, your wins aren’t as massive, but they make bankroll management easier.
Why We Still Love Lightning Variants
Most casino players don’t sit down to a live casino session with a spreadsheet and actuarial tables. The love of live casino has a whole lot do with entertainment value - and it really is a value.
Lightning variants aren't so much trying to recreate traditional table games as they are to amplify the emotional peaks of the whole experience. Throwing in multipliers brings another level of anticipation; getting a 500x payout from your stake is objectively more exciting than a 35x one.
In terms of entertainment value, you undoubtedly get a whole other aspect of amusement. In roulette, which number will get the multiplier? Will anyone hit it? In blackjack, what multiplier will I get if this hand wins? It’s not mathematical, but for me at least, it’s valuable.
It’s also worth remembering that those multipliers meet rigorous standards. The UKGC technical standards apply to multipliers as they’re decided by an RNG [4]. That means they must be random and fair. It’s not that innovation is the problem; it’s understanding how it impacts the average player’s experience.
If you’re happy to trade the excitement of a bigger win for a small reduction in RTP and a sizable leap in volatility, then lightning variants may offer better value - for you.
