How to Use Team Form to Guide Your Bets in Football

Most bettors see a clean winning streak, short odds, and think, “this has to hit”. While these two data points - the team's wins and the implied probability from the bookmaker - are important, they don’t paint the full picture.

As well as this, individual player performance, team/player news, training changes, opposition performance, and more, need to be considered.

By looking at all this data, bettors look beyond odds and recent wins and can develop their betting thesis, one that considers multiple data points, not just a few.

When is a Team “On” Form?

Many consider an on-form team as one that has consecutive wins. However, I’d argue that this isn’t true.

Wins tell us about how the team previously performed against another. This is good data, but not enough. It doesn’t tell us how they’ll perform against the team they’ll come up against.

In between the win and the next match, anything can happen. News could impact a player or team, a player can get injured, a manager can make structural changes, and so forth.

Therefore, it’s good to look beyond just wins. It’s best to create an entire thesis of why a prediction may occur.

Using their win performance as a starting point is fair, but dive further. Why did they win? Who scored, who assisted, what was their formation, who was the captain, who managed the team, and what changed from previous performances?

These are the questions a bettor needs to ask. By doing so, a story can be created on why a team is winning and whether this will continue into their future matches.

The Opposition

When measuring a team's performance, don’t forget the opposition, as they’re just as important.

All the research performed to uncover the “why” behind an on-form team's performance should be done on the opposition as well.

Simply read the data and create a story. See why the opposition is winning or losing and understand why this may or may not continue in the future.

Take Man Utd, for example. In the 2024/25 Premier League, they finished 15th. One year later, they finished 3rd. [1]

If a bettor looked only at the win data of 2024/25, they’d bet against Utd. However, if they had done so in the 2025/26 season, they would have made countless wrong predictions.

Using Team Form Data to Make Bets

By pooling all the on-form data collected, it can be used to make more informed predictions.

I’ll provide an overview of how to use this data for different bet types:

  1. Match Result: A mid-table team is on a losing streak, and the odds are short, indicating a great chance of a loss. However, their top 3 players are back from injury, and the opposition manager has just been sacked. Possible bet on the short side.

  2. Accumulators: Research shows a team has won their last four matches, but their first-team goalkeeper and midfield players are sick. Potentially take them out of the accumulator to avoid a loss.

  3. Live Betting: Unsure how a team will perform with their new first-team picks. Wait for the game to begin and make a decision based on what is seen. Odds are more unfavourable, but extra confirmation is offered.

Staying in Control

Data is key here. Don’t think a team is in-form just because of their latest wins. Uncover the why behind it. See what’s changed, what’s remaining, and develop a thesis of why this should or shouldn’t continue.

Even with this research, though, remember that results are random and 18+ UK players should only bet on sportsbooks regulated by the UKGC. GambleAware also recommends that bettors set betting limits and that they should never chase losses.
