UKGC Steps Up Enforcement

The premises was in central Manchester on Chester Road and during the raid, police found gambling paraphernalia, including poker chips, gaming tables and cash. Police also found account books, cash, and alcohol, leading to suspicions of money laundering and serving alcohol without a licence.

The 33-year-old man and the 66-year-old woman who were arrested both currently remain in custody for questioning.

Illegal Gambling Den Raids Remain Rare In The UK

While online black market gambling has dominated industry discussion in recent years, physical premises related to illegal gambling remain rare.

However, recent operations suggest authorities may be taking a more aggressive approach toward suspected underground gambling venues. This is particularly true where wider criminal activity is suspected.

Earlier this year, officers from Tarian Regional Organised Crime Unit worked alongside the Gambling Commission, HMRC, and Cardiff City Council Licensing to raid a suspected illegal gambling den in Splott, Cardiff[1].

As well as seizing poker tables, chips, and gaming equipment, officers also arrested two men on suspicion of money laundering.

Another operation in Birmingham saw West Midlands Police raid a gambling den in Ladywell Walk, where officers seized gaming machines allegedly linked to fraud and money laundering.

Taken together, the recent Manchester raid[2] alongside the Cardiff, and Birmingham operations paint a picture of illegal gambling premises increasingly being treated as part of broader organised crime involving both illegal gambling and money laundering investigations rather than isolated licensing breaches.

UKGC Becoming Increasingly Visible In Enforcement Activity

Though viewed primarily as a regulator, the Gambling Commission has become increasingly visible in direct enforcement operations.

With increases to their funding, the UKGC has been working alongside other bodies such as police forces and councils to crack down on unlicensed operators. This seems to be leading to strong results, not just where physical premises are concerned, but in their impressive online statistics too.
