It was a night to remember for Luke ‘The Nuke’ Littler in Sheffield on Thursday as he sealed his sixth Premier League nightly win of the season and secured top spot in the table for a second consecutive year. But while everything is going right for the teenage sensation on the oche, things couldn’t be more different for his beloved Manchester United.
Watching the Horror Unfold
Just 24 hours earlier, the 18-year-old world champion watched on in disbelief as United suffered one of the most humiliating nights in their history — losing 1-0 to Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final.
A die-hard United supporter, Littler wasn’t in Bilbao to watch the game live due to his darting commitments. Instead, he followed the action from a sports bar in Sheffield after a fan engagement event at the Fan Cave store in Meadowhall, which is decked out with his official merchandise.
Financial Fallout and Final Heartache
Speaking to us following his record-extending win in the Steel City, the Warrington wonderkid shared his honest take on United’s disastrous defeat.
“Losing that game last night, everyone knows financially what it's done to us, but fair play to Spurs,” Littler said.
United desperately needed the win to salvage their season, secure Champions League football and ease their ongoing financial woes — despite announcing ambitious plans for a new stadium earlier this year.
Littler didn’t shy away from giving Spurs credit, but he couldn’t resist a dig at the defensive tactics employed by Ange Postecoglou, suggesting the Australian went against his usual attacking philosophy to get the job done.
“What did they have? Three shots in the first half and that's all, then sat behind the ball, but they done a great job,” he said.
A Blessing in Disguise?
Despite the heartbreak, Littler is trying to see the positives. United currently sit 16th in the Premier League and will now miss out on European football altogether — but he believes that could be a blessing in disguise for new boss Ruben Amorim.
“I do think next season it's going to help us obviously not playing midweek. I think quite a few times this year in the Premier League teams, who are in Europe, they have a week off so everyone can get back to a hundred percent, so it might help us,” Littler told SportsBoom.co.uk.
Bruno Exit Rumours
But if losing a European final and missing out on the Champions League wasn’t bad enough, reports have already begun linking club captain Bruno Fernandes with a big-money move to Saudi side Al Hilal — a potential blow that could leave United even more vulnerable.
When asked what he thought of the prospect of losing one of the club’s few shining lights, Littler summed it up in just one word: “Shambles.”
