Former Sweden and Blackburn Rovers boss Jon Dahl Tomasson has emerged as a candidate to become the new West Brom manager, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

The 49-year-old Danish coach has been out of work since being sacked by Sweden in October last year.

And our sources have now learnt that Tomasson, who played for a string of top clubs including Newcastle United, AC Milan, Feyenoord and Villarreal, is one of the leading contenders to replace former boss Ryan Mason, who was dismissed earlier this week.

The Baggies are floundering in 18th place in the Championship after a miserable start to the season.

And ex-Tottenham Hotspur coach Mason paid the ultimate price for poor form, sent packing after a miserable tenth away loss in a row this term.

“The process of recruiting a new men’s first team Head Coach and staff is under way,” said a brief statement on West Brom’s official website.

“The club would like to place on record its thanks to Ryan, [Assistant Head Coach] Nigel [Gibbs] and [Head of Performance] Sam [Pooley] for their efforts and wishes all three the very best for the future."

“First Team Coach James Morrison will oversee first-team affairs on an interim basis until a new staff is appointed.”

    NEW APPOINTMENT

The Baggies are looking to make a new appointment before their next Championship game, at home to Middlesbrough next Friday (16 Jan).

And SportsBoom has learnt that the club have narrowed down a long list of applicants to just three managers, one of which included Tomasson.

Former Manchester United coach Eric Ramsay is also understood to be one of the trio of coaches looking to secure the role, while a third, unknown manager at this stage, is also believed to be in the running for the job.

Ramsay, 34, is currently managing Major League Soccer side Minnesota United in the United States, his first manager’s job.

The Welshman previously worked under former Man Utd boss Eric ten Hag at Old Trafford before his move stateside in February 2024.
