Gerwyn Price Gives Positive Health Update While Explaining UK Open Pool Tournament Withdrawal
Former world champion Gerwyn Price has delivered a positive health update ahead of Premier League Finals Night while also explaining his withdrawal from the UK Open Pool Championship. The Welshman admitted playing in the pool event after missing several darts tournaments “would have been a little bit naughty” as he focuses fully on his showdown with Luke Littler.

Former world champion Gerwyn Price has delivered a positive update on his health battle ahead of the Premier League Finals Night at London’s The O2, as he targets the second leg of darts’ coveted Triple Crown.
The Welshman already has the Sid Waddell Trophy at home after winning the World Championship and is now hoping to add the Premier League title to his growing list of achievements.
Positive Health Update Ahead of Premier League Finals
Earlier this month, Price opened up about his ongoing health struggles following a heavy 6-2 defeat to fellow Welsh star Jonny Clayton on Night 14 of the Premier League in Leeds.
Although Price has not publicly revealed the exact nature of the illness, he shared encouraging news with fans on social media ahead of the Premier League launch media day.
“Some great news today,” Wales arrowsmith Price said in an Instagram story.
“Results back and all good... No answers to the symptoms, but the results I had were good [three smiley face emojis and three flexed bicep emojis].”
Ready To Return To Ranking Events
Price’s health issues have forced him to significantly reduce his schedule in recent months.
Aside from weekly Premier League appearances, he has withdrawn from several events, including multiple Players Championship and European Tour tournaments.
However, following the encouraging medical update, Price revealed he is now preparing to return to a fuller calendar after the Premier League campaign concludes.
“It frees me up to go back and play a lot more ranking tournaments. After the Premier League's over, I'm going to take the next European off and Pro Tours next week, and I have a little bit of a holiday, which I haven't had for quite a while.”
“Then after that, it sets me back up to hit the ranking events quite thick and just go to everything really.”
World Cup Withdrawal A “Difficult Decision”
One of the biggest talking points surrounding Price’s recent absences was his decision to withdraw from the upcoming World Cup of Darts, where he was due to represent Wales alongside Clayton.
Instead, Clayton will now team up with Nick Kenny, who nearly lost his tour card at the 2025 World Darts Championship.
Speaking to SportsBoom, Price admitted stepping away from the event was not an easy call.
“Yeah, obviously Jonny’s disappointed, and it's a difficult decision for me as well. I hate pulling out of any events and especially the World Cup,” Price told SportsBoom.co.uk.
“Nick's a great player, great bloke, he'll give it 100% and I think he's actually playing quite well as well, so they'll be a great team.
“Jonny's obviously disappointed like I am, but great opportunity for Nick and I think they'll do well.”
Pool Event Pull-Out Explained
Away from the oche, Price had also been scheduled to compete in the UK Open Pool Championship, a Matchroom Sport event taking place just days before and during the Premier League play-offs.
The timing of the competition raised eyebrows, given Price’s recent darts withdrawals, and he was officially listed as withdrawing shortly before his scheduled clash with Kostiantyn Ivanov.
Although Price clarified that he had actually pulled out weeks earlier, with organisers exploring replacement options before confirming the news publicly.
He also admitted that, given the number of darts events he had recently missed, it would not have looked right to continue with a pool appearance while preparing for his huge Premier League showdown with Luke Littler.
“I withdrew a couple of weeks ago. I don't know if they were going to try and pull someone else in before they announced that I was pulling out,” Price added.
“I’ve pulled out of a couple of darts events, and to go and play in a pool event would have been a little bit naughty.”
“I just needed to prep as best I could for this event outside.”
