Following the sorrowful conclusion of Wolverhampton Wanderers' Premier League campaign, the corridors of Molineux Stadium are no longer filled with grief, but dominated by a massive transfer frenzy.
As the team's relegation to the Championship is finalised, Cameroonian right-back Jackson Tchatchoua leads the list of names set to escape this "sinking ship."
The 24-year-old player, who was signed from Italy’s Hellas Verona in the summer of 2025 with great expectations, has proven that he deserves to remain at the elite level with his individual performance.
Farewell to the Premier League, Hello to New Adventures
Wolverhampton’s anchoring at the bottom of the league has brought an inevitable squad overhaul.
Tchatchoua, who joined the roster last August for a fee of approximately €12.5 million, stood out with his athleticism, speed (he held the title of Serie A’s fastest player at 34 km/h), and defensive resilience despite the team’s collective failure.
Having appeared in many matches in the Premier League this season, the player has informed the board that he wishes to continue his career in Europe’s top 5 leagues rather than taking part in the tough and long marathon of the Championship.
Wolverhampton’s Strategy: "Damage Control"
Due to the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and a financial table where operating costs reached 117% of revenue, the Wolves management has placed Tchatchoua at the top of the "strategic sales" list.
Although Wolves trust the player's potential, they know it is impossible to meet Tchatchoua's weekly wage of £65,000 (approximately £3.3 million annually) with Championship revenues. Therefore, the "green light" has been given for the player's transfer.
Having demanded between €20-25 million for the player during the winter transfer window, Wolves have been forced to lower this figure below €20 million due to the weakened bargaining power brought by relegation. It is rumoured that offers around €15 million will be accepted at the table under current market conditions.
The club plans to use the funds generated from Tchatchoua to sign lower-cost players who are familiar with the league to compete for the Championship title.
Interested Clubs: Offers Pouring in from Across Europe
Tchatchoua's "modern full-back" profile, capable of playing both as a right-back and a right wing-back, whets the appetite of many clubs.
The Italian market is where Tchatchoua is best known. Bologna, who wanted the player in the winter but opted for Joao Mario, is back in the race to strengthen their rotation. The player's success during his Verona stint makes him a "risk-free transfer" for Serie A sides.
Despite the relegation, staying in the English top flight would not be a surprise. It is noted that clubs like Brentford, Fulham, and Crystal Palace are monitoring the player, who has gained Premier League experience and has no adaptation issues, for squad depth.
Real Betis and Villarreal from Spain want to utilise the player's speed in transition play, while Marseille and Rennes from France are knocking on Wolves' door to add dynamism to their defensive line.
Contract Details and Financial Facts
Tchatchoua’s current contract with Wolverhampton continues until June 30, 2030. While this five-year deal signed in 2025 would normally give Wolves the upper hand, relegation clauses or wage obligations have cornered the club.
His current weekly wage of £65,000 is an affordable figure for mid-level Premier League and top-level Serie A clubs. Rumours suggest the player expects a similar salary and a "starting XI guarantee" at his new club.
