Many readers may have forgotten, as it was a move that never really worked out, but Odysseas Vlachodimos is still a Newcastle United player, and his situation is expected to be reviewed this summer.

For those who may not recall much about the player, it’s worth noting that he is one of the top, if not the best, goalkeepers Greece has produced over the past decade.

He played in the country with Panathinaikos, became a starter at Benfica, was adored by the club’s fans, and then decided to chase a dream: to play in the Premier League.

He secured a move to Nottingham Forest three years ago but never truly adapted. He made just seven appearances and went from first-choice to second behind Matt Turner.

His dream seemed to be fading, until Newcastle stepped in.

HIS FRIENDS AT NEWCASTLE, THE QUESTION HE ASKED, AND THE WORLD CUP

The Magpies decided to sign him last summer, and Vlachodimos was eager to prove himself.

He wanted to become a starter, quickly embraced football in England, and believed his performances in training, where he stood out, would convince Eddie Howe.

It didn’t happen. He played just once for Newcastle, in a League Cup match, and when he later asked why, he didn’t receive a clear answer.

He worked excellently in training, had great relationships with everyone, was close friends with Guimarães and Joelinton, and no one could question his professionalism.

However, with Nick Pope as the first-choice goalkeeper and Aaron Ramsdale behind him, Vlachodimos realised once again that his chance wouldn’t come. Game time was unlikely, and concerns about the Greek national team began to grow. Without minutes, he risked losing his place, and with the World Cup still uncertain, that was a major issue.

SEVILLA’S PLAN, TWO… ACTIVE CONTRACTS, AND NEWCASTLE’S DILEMMA

At that point, someone with strong ties to Greece stepped in to “rescue” him.

Matías Almeyda, former AEK manager, wanted him at Sevilla, and the Greek goalkeeper was excited by the project. A beautiful city, a historic club, and a first opportunity to play in La Liga, why say no?

There, unlike his previous experiences, things went according to plan.

He became a starter and an undisputed presence, and currently has 28 appearances across all competitions, totaling more than 2,500 minutes on the pitch.

Still, the situation remains unclear. No one can predict what will happen this summer. Will he stay at Sevilla on a permanent deal, or will Newcastle bring him back to St James’ Park for a second chance?

According to SportsBoom sources, everything will depend on Sevilla and whether they remain in La Liga. They are just one point above the relegation zone, and Almeyda has already departed.

If the team manages to stay up, they will try to sign him, but it won’t be easy. Newcastle paid €16 million for him and would want a similar fee to let him go.

For that reason, I expect the English club to refuse. And Vlachodimos’ dream may be reignited. We are talking about a player who doesn’t give up easily. He will want to return, prove himself, and show that his dream is still alive, that he still has something to prove in England.

And don’t forget: his contract with Newcastle runs until 2028, while Pope’s deal expires in 2027. Nothing is certain…
