Having joined Arsenal from Lille in 2020 and become "indispensable" in Mikel Arteta's system ever since, Gabriel Magalhães has moved to the centre of transfer rumours for the summer of 2026.
The flawless chemistry he has developed with William Saliba has made Gabriel not just a defender, but one of the most complete centre-backs in modern football.
However, this success has caused the radars of Madrid and Paris to turn toward North London.
"Not for Sale, Untouchable!"
The North London side has set its position regarding Gabriel in a very clear and firm manner.
Arsenal management and Arteta view Gabriel as one of the three or four players forming the backbone of the team.
The immediate rejection of "discreet pulse-checking" from Real Madrid during the past winter window is the greatest indicator of this determination.
Arsenal now wants to prove that it is no longer a "selling club," but has achieved "target club" status that turns down offers from giants.
If Arsenal are convinced to sit at the table at some point, the transfer fee expected to be demanded for Gabriel is between €100 million and €110 million. The fact that the player is a left-footed centre back, his goal threat at set-pieces, and his leadership qualities are the elements justifying this astronomical figure.
Arsenal's financial structure is currently very healthy. Although the club has broadened the defensive rotation by adding names like Piero Hincapié to the squad, this move is not a preparation for Gabriel's departure, but aimed at increasing competition. A sale of Gabriel could only become an option if there is a desire to break a "historic record" in the club's transfer budget.
The "Defensive Operation" of Real Madrid and PSG
Gabriel's physical strength and ability to play out from the back act as the "missing piece" for Europe's elite.
Real Madrid have placed Gabriel at the top of their shortlist to renew the aging rotation in the defensive line and find a long-term leader.
It is rumoured that the Madrid side is "quietly" monitoring the player's situation and could knock on Arsenal's door in the summer months. However, the latest talks rejected by Arsenal show that Madrid's job will be anything but easy.
Madrid have also been linked with a move for Jurrien Timber as they explore long-term options at right-back, viewing him as both potential succession planning for Dani Carvajal and added competition for Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Additionally, Seeking to strengthen their defensive setup with more athletic and technically gifted names, PSG is ready to allocate an unlimited budget for Gabriel.
It is claimed that the French giant aims to finalise the transfer by offering a wage package to the player that will "make rejection difficult."
Contract Status and Wage Expectations
In June 2025, Gabriel extended his contract with Arsenal until June 30, 2029. This move is the biggest card strengthening Arsenal's hand to an impossible degree at the bargaining table. The player's contract until 2029 gives the club the luxury of rejecting any offer without question.
Currently one of Arsenal's highest-earning defenders, it is among leaked news that Gabriel expects a net annual salary in the €12-15 million range and a guarantee of an "absolute championship project" in the event of a potential transfer.
Official Statements vs. The Rumour Mill
Arsenal Football Club emphasises at every opportunity that Gabriel is a "vital piece" for the future of the team.
Although some sources claim that Gabriel's agent held some meetings in Madrid, this situation has not yet been confirmed. Most experts also evaluate that these reports may have been circulated to secure a higher wage improvement from Arsenal.
There is a growing belief that Gabriel could become unsettled if Arsenal fail to secure either the Premier League title or a UEFA Champions League triumph in the coming seasons, potentially prompting him to push for a move in search of guaranteed major honours.
