Head-to-Head:

Both Barry Hawkins and Daniel Wells have competed against each other on the green baize a total of five times throughout their careers. The first game took place in 2009, with their last battle occurring 15 years later in 2024. Wells has won three matches, all of which have arrived in the past three matches, while Hawkins won the first two games in 2009 and in 2017.

This should make for an exciting and close competition because not only is it a close head-to-head record, but both players have played each other across a wide range of formats. This familiarity should make this game an intriguing contest, which could go all the way in the deciding frame.

Player Career Timeline

Barry Hawkins

World Snooker Tour Ranking: 12

British Open best result: Quarter-Final (2004)

World number 12 Barry Hawkins returns to the British Open for the first time since the 2023 edition. This tournament in particular has not been one of Hawkins’ best tournaments, as his best run arrived in 2004 when he reached the quarter-final. Despite the long hiatus of the tournament not being held, Hawkins still hasn’t produced the goods in Cheltenham.

That said, although no ranking title arrived last season, the 46-year-old had one of his most successful years on the tour, reaching the final of the UK Championship and German Masters, respectively. He’s continued the momentum from last year into this season, meaning he could add a TV tournament to his portfolio. When in form, Hawkins has shown time and time again that he is one of the best in the world, even if his lack of titles alludes him.

Last 5 TV Tournament Runs:

2025 Wuhan Open – 3rd Round
2025 Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters – Quarter-Final
2025 Shanghai Masters – 2nd Round
2025 Championship League – Round Robin
2025 World Championship – 1st Round

Daniel Wells

World Snooker Tour Ranking: 44

British Open best result: First Round (2023)

Daniel Wells is set to make his second appearance at the British Open after qualifying for the first time in 2023. In that specific tournament, he lost in the first round, but he will be looking to improve on his poor record. The Welshman’s best ranking finish is reaching three semi-finals, indicating that he has what it takes to produce moments of magic. Although he has no ranking tournament wins to his name, he is currently 46th in the world, a sign that he is improving at a steady pace. The 37-year-old will have a tough test against Barry Hawkins, but the head-to-head does show that he’s beaten him over a best-of-seven format before.

Last 5 TV Tournament Runs:

2025 Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters – 3rd Round
2025 Championship League – Round Robin
2025 World Championship – 1st Round
2025 World Open – 2nd Round
2025 German Masters – 2nd Round

Value Bets

  1. Total Frames – Under 6.5 Frames

These first-round clashes are quick due to the format being first to four frames. This makes any game tricky, even for those in strong form. There’s some history between the two players, meaning we could expect a close game when judging the head-to-head charts.

  2. Total Frames Even/Odd – Even

Based on our value bet that sees us predict this game to be completed in under 6.5 frames, we expect this game’s total frame count to end as an even number.

  3. Either Player to Win Successive Frames – Barry Hawkins

Barry Hawkins’ ranking and form suggest he might be the best fit to win successive frames in this game. The first-to-four frame contest means winning successive frames is half the job, which could present the Englishmen with all the momentum.

Prediction: Barry Hawkins to win 4-2

SportsBoom concludes this preview by predicting Barry Hawkins to edge past Daniel Wells 4-2. Hawkins may have a less favourable head-to-head record against his Welsh rival, but he is in stronger form and should progress through. Wells may get a couple of frames on the board, but Hawkins is set to claim his first win against him since their 2017 Shanghai Masters clash.
