The 2025-2026 season at Tottenham Hotspur, the North London representative of the Premier League, has turned into a literal struggle for existence, both on the pitch and in the boardroom.
The club’s inconsistent performance in the league, sitting just one step above the relegation zone, has deepened the crisis and opened the future of star names in the squad to debate. One of the players at the centre of these discussions, Radu Drăgușin.
Transferred from Genoa at the beginning of 2024 with great hopes and a package worth approximately €28 million, the centre back is preparing to leave the team in the summer transfer window due to his failure to find the expected playing time and the sporting chaos within the club.
Relegation Fear and Financial Bottleneck
The Tottenham management is about to enter one of the most challenging financial corners in club history.
A potential relegation scenario would radically change the club’s entire transfer policy.
If Tottenham is relegated, club revenues are expected to drop from the £600 million level to as low as £350 million.
This situation will make selling high-cost players with high market value, like Drăgușin, a necessity rather than a choice.
Tottenham wants to recoup the investment paid to Genoa in January 2024.
The club is preparing to open negotiations at a fee between €20 million and €25 million.
With the player’s market value shown as €20 million in current reports, any cash offer received is being meticulously examined.
Suitors Lining Up: Leipzig, Roma, and Juventus on the Prowl
Drăgușin’s impressive past in Italy and his Premier League experience make him an attractive target for all three of Europe’s major leagues.
RB Leipzig: The German side is currently the club taking the most concrete steps in the Drăgușin transfer.
According to internal information, Leipzig will continue negotiations to reach an agreement in principle with the player’s side. The Leipzig project, which polishes young defenders and sells them to world giants, fits perfectly with Drăgușin’s development plan. The German giant is expected to sit at the table with an offer of around €20 million.
Return to Serie A (Roma & Juventus): Italy is where Drăgușin feels most comfortable. While rumours suggest Roma is preparing a loan offer with an option to buy, it is also claimed that his former club, Juventus, could make a buy-back move to create defensive depth. Fiorentina previously had interest in the Romanian international, but the player has eyes for a bigger move.
Contract Status
Drăgușin has a long-term contract with Tottenham until June 30, 2030. While this strengthens Tottenham’s hand at the table, the player’s unhappiness and the club’s risk of relegation erode this power.
The player, who earns approximately €2.8 million annually, is stated to be in expectation of a similar or better financial package at his new club.
