The official end of Wolverhampton Wanderers' eight-year journey in the Premier League following the defeat against Leeds United has triggered one of the biggest crises in the club's history.

At the epicentre of this earthquake is the English forward of Portuguese descent, Mateus Mané, who has been one of few bright sparks this season.

According to sources close to the player, the 18-year-old super-talent has no intention of continuing his career in the lower flight (Championship) and has reached the point of burning bridges with the management.

"The £50 Million Barricade and Economic Collapse"

While the Wolves management considers how to compensate for the massive loss of broadcast revenue brought by relegation (approximately £100 million), they are putting up a final resistance to avoid losing their most valuable asset, Mané.

Wolves, despite their weakened hand, announced that they would not negotiate any offer below £50 million (approximately €58 million) for Mané. However, the general consensus across SportsBoom's sources is that due to the player's determination to leave and the club's need for cash, this figure is more likely to flex towards the £30 million mark.

The necessity for relegated teams to sell their stars to fix their financial balance sheets makes it impossible for Wolves to play the "reluctant seller" role at the bargaining table.

The sale of Mané is seen as the only way to finance 3-4 other positions for the club.

Transfer Tug-of-War

The fact that Mané possesses all the attributes a modern forward should have (pace, finishing, and game intelligence) makes him an unmissable "relegation bargain" for the giants.

Manchester United has placed Mané at the very top of their transfer shortlist. United’s new sporting directorate structure wants to finalise the transfer quickly by capitalising on the player's "unhappy" situation at Wolves.

The plan United offers the player is to include him directly into the wide rotation and ensure he remains in the Premier League.

It is known that Mikel Arteta is an admirer of Mané's "tactical flexibility" (his ability to play on the wings and as a number 10).

Additionally, it is among leaked information that Arsenal scouts have followed every match of Mané's from the stands for the last 3 months and gave top marks to the professionalism shown by the player even in a relegated team.

Some sources claim that Liverpool has already conducted a preliminary meeting with Mané's family. Although Liverpool views Mané as a "future investment," the player’s Premier League experience is deemed sufficient to put him directly onto the pitch.

Contract Details and Wage Crisis

Mané’s contract running until June 2029 is Wolves' only trump card. However, the 30-40% wage reduction clause in the contract that is triggered in the event of relegation is the biggest financial driver of Mané's desire to leave.

The prospect of his £15,000 weekly wage dropping pushes the player towards offers in the £60-80 thousand range.
