Having delivered a performance of 10 goals and 5 assists in 37 appearances across all competitions for Borussia Dortmund this season, Karim Adeyemi has endured a campaign that could statistically be described as "not bad"; however, he has fallen out of favour in manager Niko Kovac’s plans due to inconsistency and disciplinary issues.
Specifically, the heavy fine received following the incident during the national team camp in November, combined with his aggressive reactions when being substituted, has completely burned bridges with the Dortmund management.
Borussia Dortmund’s Strategy
Dortmund management, which at one point valued Adeyemi at €60-70 million, is now adopting a more pragmatic stance.
Although Dortmund still believes in the player's potential, they view a sale as a "necessity" due to the decline in professional standards and the deadlock in new contract negotiations.
Sources close to the club state that Dortmund is ready to sacrifice Adeyemi to balance the financial books and undergo a comprehensive squad overhaul.
Dortmund are ready to open negotiations in the €60 million bracket following the player's disciplinary problems. However, with giants like Arsenal and Manchester United entering the fray, the goal is for this figure to reach higher levels including add-ons.
The club plans to rid itself of the annual €5 million wage burden of Adeyemi and utilise these resources for a more consistent wing-forward and defensive reinforcements.
Dortmund are also considering cashing in on right-back Julian Ryerson as part of their wider squad reshaping and cost-balancing strategy this summer.
Premier League Giants Waiting in the Wings
Adeyemi’s explosive power and impact on the counter-attack have mobilised English sides that particularly favour transitional play.
He is viewed as a "joker" in Mikel Arteta’s system who could provide direct competition for Gabriel Martinelli and operate in every area of the attack (right wing, left wing, centre forward).
During their current rebuilding phase, Manchester United also evaluate Adeyemi as a "dynamic piece" to break the static structure of their attacking rotation. United are expected to submit an official package to Dortmund at the start of the summer.
Contract Status and Wage Expectations
Adeyemi’s current contract with Dortmund continues until June 30, 2027. The fact that he will have only one year remaining on his contract is the biggest factor forcing Dortmund to sell this summer.
Currently earning approximately €96,000 per week, it is claimed that Adeyemi wants to pull this figure into the £150,000 - £180,000 per week bracket upon a move to the Premier League.
