Newcastle United want to make the most of the uncertainty surrounding West Ham United to swoop for defender Konstantinos Mavropanos, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
There are a number of board-level roles vacant at the Hammers, following Karren Brady’s recent resignation.
The uncertainty off the field comes amid uncertainly on it as well, with the East London uncertain which league they will be playing in next season.
It is understood the Hammers are willing to let Greek international Mavropanos leave this summer.
And the Magpies, who are facing a summer rebuild job at St James’ Park ready to pounce according to sources close to the club.
According to sources, a move for Mavroponas is not dependant on whether Eddie Howe remains at the helm or not with the board sold on the 28-year-old’s credentials.
Mavropanos has been a standout in the Hammers’ revival under Nuno Espírito Santo during the second half of the campaign.
It is understood contract talks stalled earlier this season with the centre-back, who is under contract until 2028, interested in a move away from the club.
Newcastle have also added Nottingham Forest defender Murillo to their transfer shortlist, but a move for Mavropanos would present a significantly cheaper alternative, with the Greek international viewed as a more cost-effective option in the centre-back market.
On His Way
There is interest from abroad in his talents, but sources say Dortmund have been put off by West Ham’s €30million asking price.
Meanwhile, it is understood another Bundesliga club remains interested despite the price tag.
SportsBoom have been told Newcastle are happy with the price and are ready to move once the summer window opens.
Born in Athens, Mavropanos started his career on home soil before moving to Arsenal in 2018.
He made just eight appearances in all competitions across a four-year stay at the Emirates, which included three loans to Germany.
After two campaigns at VfB Stuttgart, the Bundesliga club signing him for €3.5million in 2022.
Mavropanos, capped 41 times by his country, moved to West Ham on a five-year deal the following year for €25million.
