Known in the football world as the "transfer gold mine," FC Porto has once again managed to line up European giants at the gates of the Dragão Stadium. 

This time, the spotlight is firmly on the Argentine midfield maestro, Alan Varela. 

After completing his adaptation to Portuguese football at lightning speed following his transfer from Boca Juniors in the summer of 2023, Varela has become the most coveted "number 6" profile of the Summer 2026 transfer window. 

The financial powerhouses of the Premier League and Europe’s elite clubs have effectively begun a chess match to secure the Argentine's signature.

His performance in all competitions for Porto during the 2025-2026 season has positioned Alan Varela as one of the most efficient defensive midfielders not only in the Portuguese league but in all of Europe. 

Established at the heart of the game in Francesco Farioli's system, Varela leads the league in tackling statistics while displaying the "regista" qualities demanded by modern football with a pass accuracy exceeding 90%. 

His composure in the Champions League makes him "indispensable" in the reports of Premier League scouts.

Porto’s Stance: "The Release Clause is Our Red Line"

The FC Porto hierarchy does not view a sale as a necessity, given the player’s leadership role and his importance in Farioli's plans. However, the club bolstered its position as a "tough seller" by extending his contract in May 2025 and raising his release clause to €75 million. 

The club management has decided not to even negotiate any offer below this figure; especially since his former club, Boca Juniors, holds a 20% sell-on clause, making the net amount Porto receives critical.

Interested Clubs: A Detailed Analysis

Three main fronts have emerged in the European transfer market for Varela. 

It is said that Pep Guardiola views Varela as one of the ideal solutions for the gaps in the midfield rotation. The City camp is rumoured to be the strongest candidate to trigger the release clause due to the player's playmaking ability and calmness under pressure. He would be the perfect replacement for former Balon d'or winning midfielder Rodri, who has been linked with a move away.

In a period of restructuring, the Red Devils want to entrust the midfield to Varela for the post-Casemiro era. Leaked news suggests United scouts have camped out in Portugal throughout the season and are preparing to knock on Porto’s door with an offer.

Additionally, It is reported that Diego Simeone views his compatriot Varela as the "new Gabi" and will formalise the attempts made during the January window this summer. It is known that Atletico is focusing on a "cash plus player swap" formula, but Porto remains open only to cash offers.

Porto is accustomed to making one "big sale" every summer in line with FFP rules and financial sustainability goals. 

However, in the new identity established with Farioli's arrival, Varela is seen as the engine of the system.
