Gerhard Struber wants to return to Europe following his Bristol City sacking, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

The Austrian was relieved of his duties at Ashton Gate during the international break as former England boss Roy Hodgson returned to the West Country club.

And our sources have been told Struber is keen on a job in continental Europe after his second foray into English football ended with a whimper.

It is understood two MLS clubs are keen on the 49-year-old’s services.

Struber previously managed at New York Red Bulls. But it is understood he will turn down any approaches as he holds out for a move to one of Europe’s big five countries.

Struber returned to the English Football League with a big reputation having been at Red Bull Salzburg.

He was appointed as Robins’ boss in June as the club looked to end their reputation of being a mid-table club.

But with City set to miss out on the play-offs, club bosses decided to axe Struber following a run of just one point in five league games, a spell which coincided with being stunned by League One basement boys Port Vale in the FA Cup.

He finished his spell at the club with a win percentage of just 37.2 per cent from his 43 games in charges, the worst of his managerial career other than Barnsley, his only other previous role in England.

Looking For Next Move

After retiring from competitive football at Salzburg in 2008, the former Austrian U21 international went into sales before quitting the sector to undergo his coaching badges.

He cut his teeth at FC Liefering and Wolfsberger AC before being given the Barnsley job in 2019.

After 39 games at Oakwell, he went to New York and managed the club 87 times before going to sister club Salzburg in his homeland.

Despite winning almost 60 per cent of games at Salzburg, he was dismissed after less than a year and spent a season at 1. FC Köln being appointed Bristol City boss.
