Coventry City will try to lure Marcelino Núñez away from Ipswich Town if the Tractor Boys fail to get promoted, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

Frank Lampard has secured the Sky Blues’ promotion to the Premier League as champions.

As much as the club are revelling in that triumph, which will see them return to the top flight for the first time in 25 years, attention has now shifted to how they stay in the Premier League.

That has been the challenge for many clubs who have got promoted in recent years.

And playmaker Núñez has emerged as a transfer target this summer, our sources have been told.

Ipswich are currently in second, joint on points with third-placed Millwall but with a potentially season-defining game in hand.

It is understood Coventry are high on the Chile international, but are resigned to the fact of missing out on their man if Kieran McKenna’s side also get promoted.

Núñez’s contract at Portman Road runs until 2029 and if would take a decent fee, believed to be in the region of £20million, to see them part company with the 26-year-old.

Controversial Transfer

Núñez made the controversial move from Norwich City to arch-rivals Ipswich last year, becoming the first player since Andy Marshall to cross the bitter East Anglian divide since 2001.

His eight assists, as well as three goals, have helped Ipswich fly up the Championship table and put them at the front of the promotion race with three games to go.

Earlier in his career, Núñez played at Universidad Católica in his homeland where he won back-to-back league and cup doubles before moving to Norwich.

He was part of the Canaries’ side which lost in the play-offs two seasons ago and moved to Ipswich, who had just been relegated from the Premier League, at the beginning of this season.
