Bristol City have added Gary Rowett to their manager shortlist amid Burnley’s interest in Steven Gerrard, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

Now the Football League season has come to an end, barring respective play-off campaigns, the manager merry-go round is in full swing.

The Robins are after a new manager after Roy Hodgson’s interim return to the club, which he first managed in 1982, came to an end.

It appeared likely they would secure Liverpool legend Gerrard’s services as he was the early frontrunner for the Ashton Gate role.

But with Burnley sniffing around, the City boardroom have been forced to look at alternatives if they miss out on their man.

Former Rangers’ boss Gerrard has been out of work since leaving Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League by mutual consent in January 2025.

And Leicester City boss Rowett has emerged as a contender, despite the Foxes’ relegation.

With the former Premier League champions’ financial plight, it is understood relegation to League One has not damaged his stock among the Robins’ board.

Rowett has won the Championship Manager of the Month Award on three occasions and has had spells with Birmingham City, Stoke City, Millwall, brief return to Birmingham, Oxford United and Leicester.

Rowett Keen On King Power

Gerrard turned down a return to Rangers when Russell Martin was sacked back in October, but is ready for a return to management.

It is believed he would prefer the Burnley job, which would give him a better chance of getting promoted to the Premier League.

Although Rowett is expected to leave Leicester following their relegation, he said: “I’m like any manager, I see a fantastic opportunity here. I think there’s going to be some big decisions and it’s going to need someone, in my opinion, brave enough to make those decisions.”

“Of course I’d like the opportunity to rebuild this and I think I could be exactly what the club needs.”
