Ethan Nwaneri, one of the greatest potentials produced by North London in recent years, is about to enter the most critical summer transfer window of his career.
The 19-year-old, who spent the last five months on loan at France's well-established club Marseille to continue his development, has not fully achieved the expected "explosion," yet he continues to draw the interest of Europe's giant clubs with his talent.
With Marseille's decision not to exercise any buy option, the young star will return to Arsenal, and a hot transfer line has already been established within the London-Milan-Dortmund triangle.
Marseille Experience and Return to Arsenal
The loan period spent at Marseille was instructive for Nwaneri but remained lacklustre in terms of statistics.
The young talent, who occasionally struggled in the physical game structure of Ligue 1, showed at every opportunity that he is still a special player with his technical capacity and vision of the game.
The Marseille management's decision not to acquire his permanent transfer is interpreted more as a preference for experienced names and the financial restructuring the French club is going through, rather than a reflection of the player's quality.
Nwaneri stands at the top of the "pure talent" category with his ball control in tight spaces and key pass ability.
A Sale or One More Chance?
The Arsenal management and manager Mikel Arteta are at a very sensitive point regarding Nwaneri.
Although Arsenal sees Nwaneri as the "pearl of the academy," they struggle to make room for him directly in the squad depth during a title race.
The club needs a serious resource for the major transfers to be made this summer (especially for a forward and central midfielder). Therefore, an attractive transfer offer for Nwaneri could be used to finance reinforcements for other areas of the club.
Arsenal is expected to open the door in the 55-60 million Euro range for the young star, whose contract is ongoing. Additionally, a "buy-back" or "sell-on clause" to be added to the contract will be one of the London side's major conditions.
Transfer Line
The uncertainty regarding Nwaneri’s future at Arsenal has mobilized clubs in Europe that hunt for young talent.
Two giants of Italian football see Nwaneri as a long-term project player. Specifically, it is stated that AC Milan is preparing a serious package for Nwaneri, inspired by the success of British players in Serie A (such as Tomori and Loftus-Cheek). Juventus, on the other hand, wants to integrate Nwaneri into the center of the midfield as part of its squad rejuvenation operation.
Borussia Dortmund, the number one in Europe for polishing young players and turning them into world stars, sees Nwaneri as the "new Jude Bellingham" project. It is rumoured that the German side is trying to get ahead in this race by giving the player a "guaranteed regular playing time."
Information has leaked that the player’s representatives have been gauging interest from Europe chasing Premier League teams (such as Aston Villa and Chelsea). Nwaneri’s desire to prove himself by staying in England keeps this option alive.
Additionally, Arsenal are also understood to be open to cashing in on Gabriel Martinelli this summer, with Como winger Jesús Rodríguez already identified as a potential replacement as part of the club’s attacking rebuild.
Contract Details and Salary Expectation
Nwaneri’s current professional contract with Arsenal is at a considerable level despite his young age.
It is stated that the player expects earnings in the 4-5 million Euro range annually from his new club, parallel to his development.
Arsenal plans to transfer the revenue obtained from Nwaneri’s departure directly into a midfield transfer of starting eleven quality.
