You will hear plenty about Kostas Tsimikas and what the future holds for him this summer, particularly regarding whether he returns to Liverpool or departs permanently.

That much is certain. This has been the case since January, when reports first emerged suggesting a potential return to Anfield, as part of a possible domino effect involving Andy Robertson and a move from Liverpool to Tottenham.

That was the situation around three months ago. At the time, Tsimikas was said to be open to the idea, while Roma were not expected to stand in the way. In the end, however, the deal never materialised. Robertson chose to remain at Liverpool until the summer, the Italian side failed to secure a new left-back, and the Greek international stayed at the Olimpico.

So, what will happen in the coming months when his future is discussed again?

A half-hour phone call and a quick “yes”

According to sources close to SportsBoom, Tsimikas has already made his preference clear.

He would like to return to Anfield and continue his journey with the club that established him at the highest level.

That would be his ideal outcome this summer.

But what about Liverpool’s stance? It aligns completely. Most importantly, this intention remains in place regardless of whether Arne Slot continues as head coach beyond the summer.

SportsBoom understands that Liverpool have already made direct contact with Tsimikas, informing him that he is part of their plans, both for pre-season and for the upcoming campaign.

He is expected to serve as the team’s second-choice left-back, behind Milos Kerkez. And this is not an issue for the player. He has already embraced that role in the past, accepted Andy Robertson’s status as first choice, and is prepared to do the same again.

The logic behind Liverpool’s decision

There are multiple benefits for Liverpool in bringing Tsimikas back to Anfield.

Firstly, he is a player who will not create issues regarding playing time. Secondly, he is well-liked by the fans, who know him, support him, and would welcome him back warmly. Thirdly, he maintains excellent relationships with the majority of the squad.

Although his close friend Mohamed Salah may be departing, Tsimikas remains on great terms with key figures such as Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konaté and Dominik Szoboszlai.

It is also worth recalling the moment that went viral after Greece’s friendly against Hungary in Budapest, when Tsimikas and Szoboszlai were seen sharing a warm exchange after the match.

There is clear logic behind Liverpool’s stance. They know exactly what they have in Tsimikas: reliability, dressing room stability, and a cost-effective solution. As a result, the club does not need to enter the market for a new left-back and can instead focus on strengthening other areas.

These include signing a central defender, one or two forwards following Hugo Ekitike’s serious injury, and potentially a winger, with Marseille's Igor Paixão remerging as a target, as per SportsBoom's sources.

Bonus insight

Olympiacos, the club that played a key role in his early development and facilitated his move to Liverpool, are indeed interested in bringing him back.

This is accurate. However, such a move is not expected immediately. In two years’ time, it could well be the ideal next step, when Tsimikas decides to leave Liverpool, reduce his salary, and return to Greece.

For the record, Tsimikas has made 115 appearances for Liverpool across all competitions, registering 18 assists and no official goals. His only goal came in a friendly against Manchester United, while he famously scored the decisive penalty in the 2022 FA Cup final, helping Liverpool lift the trophy for the first time in 16 years.
