Steve Cooper is being lined up as the new Sheffield Wednesday boss, but Sean Dyche is also interested in the job, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

Former Leicester City, Nottingham Forest and Swansea City manager Cooper has been out of work since being sacked by the Foxes in November last year.

And our sources have learnt he has been quick to throw his hat into the ring for the sought-after Owls vacancy following Danny Rohl’s departure.

The Hillsborough hierarchy have faced criticism for allowing Rohl to depart his role less than two weeks before the start of the new Championship season.

And although the crisis-hit Owls are under a string of financial embargoes, Welshman Cooper is still keen to see if can help the club get back on track.

Former Everton and Burnley boss Dyche is on the lookout for a new job since being sacked by the Toffees in January this year, with David Moyes brought back by the Merseysiders for a second spell in charge.

Dyche knows how to win promotion to the Premier League having twice guided the Clarets to the top-flight, first as Championship winners in the 2015-16 season and prior as English second-tier runners-up.

But SportsBoom has learnt that the Owls have pinpoint Cooper as the ideal candidate to try and turn the club around amidst their worrying financial worries.

THREADBARE SQUAD

Sheffield Wednesday players have not been paid for two months and a staggering seven players have left on free transfers during continuing turmoil, including Josh Windass, Michael Smith, Callum Paterson, Michael Ihiekwe, Mallik Wilks, Pol Valentin and Akin Famewo.

Winger Djeidi Gassama joined Rangers in a deal believed to be worth £2million earlier this month, while club stalwart Barry Bannan and fellow experienced professionals Ben Hamer and Marvin Johnson are now out of contract.

German boss Rohl left my “mutual consent”, but our sources understand a fractured relationship with controversial club owner Dejphon Chansiri was only going to ends one way.

"A very special time is coming to an end and I am incredibly grateful for the experiences we shared over 21 unforgettable months together," Rohl posted on Instagram following his departure.

"This summer has been difficult and, in the end, the club and I came to the mutual decision to part ways."

"I understand the different thoughts and reactions to everything that has been going on during these past few months."

"I am extremely grateful to have had this opportunity. Even during the difficult moments and setbacks, I have always continued to feel the support from everyone."
